BD-4 Safety Report

There are several reported accidents that were caused by fuel starvation (mostly during climb-out). The fuel tanks are integrated into the wings. There is no dihedral, which makes it trickier to find the lowest point in the tank to pick up the fuel. However, it is commonly agreed that a properly built fuel system that has been tested on the ground in nose high attitude will not cause fuel flow related problems. Please refer to the fuel section.

Although the BD-4 is not a STOL, the higher stall speed seems unproblematic. There was a fatal accident with a BD-4 on floats, however.

Very likely, not all of the numerous design modifications that were applied by various builders were totally safe. However, the plans built BD-4 shows no inherent safety flaw.  It seems the strong fuselage has prevented some injuries in the past.

Considering the hundreds of flying BD-4 the low number of known accidents can be interpreted as a good safety record.

The newsletters contain a number of accident reports. We plan to extract these and present them on this page.

Refer to the NTSB page for a list of reported accidents.
